Leadership & Connection: Courageous Communication with Sage Hobbs

In this episode of Inspirational Leadership, I’m joined by leadership coach, facilitator, and author Sage Hobbs for a thoughtful conversation about the role communication plays in building trust, connection, and healthy team cultures.

While communication is often treated as a technical skill in leadership, Sage reminds us that at its heart, communication is relational. It’s not just about exchanging information — it’s about creating understanding and connection.

Drawing from her book Naked Communication, Sage shares her framework for Communication for Connection, a leadership approach that centers on compassion, clarity, courage, and curiosity.

Moving Beyond Transactional Communication

Many leaders focus on communication as a way to deliver information, provide direction, or move work forward. While these things matter, Sage emphasizes that the real power of communication lies in the quality of connection it creates.

When communication is grounded in connection, people are more likely to feel:

  • Seen
  • Heard
  • Valued
  • Understood

For leaders, this has a powerful impact. Teams that feel connected are more engaged, collaborative, and willing to contribute their ideas.

The Communication for Connection Framework

Sage’s framework offers leaders a practical way to strengthen how they communicate with others.

Compassion

Compassion creates space for people to show up authentically. Leadership can be complex and challenging, and compassion helps leaders navigate difficult moments with greater understanding — for others and for themselves.

Clarity

One of the most common communication challenges in organizations is a lack of clarity. Leaders may believe they are being clear, while others walk away uncertain about expectations or direction.

Intentional communication means slowing down enough to ensure that messages are understood the way they are intended.

Courage

Leadership communication often requires courage. Whether it’s having a difficult conversation, offering honest feedback, or speaking up about an issue, courageous communication helps build trust and accountability.

As Sage shares, leadership often requires the willingness to take interpersonal risks.

Curiosity

Curiosity is one of the most powerful leadership practices. Instead of assuming we understand someone’s intent or perspective, curiosity invites us to explore what might be happening beneath the surface.

Questions rooted in curiosity often open the door to deeper understanding and stronger relationships.

The Power of Reflection

Another important theme in our conversation is the role of reflection and pause.

In fast-paced work environments, leaders often feel pressure to respond quickly and move directly toward solutions. Yet some of the most valuable insights come when we create space to slow down and reflect.

Reflection allows leaders to:

  • Respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally

  • Gain perspective on complex situations

  • Notice patterns in their leadership and communication

Sometimes the most effective leadership move is simply to pause before responding.

Practical Ways to Strengthen Your Communication

If you’re looking to improve your leadership communication, Sage suggests starting with a few simple practices.

Reflect on your communication habits

Notice how you tend to show up in conversations. Do you speak quickly? Hold back feedback? Make assumptions? Awareness is the first step toward change.

Practice courageous conversations

Think about one conversation you’ve been avoiding and consider how you might approach it with clarity and curiosity.

Lead with compassion

Communication is a skill that evolves over time. Extending compassion to yourself and others creates space for learning and growth.

Final Thoughts

Communication shapes every aspect of leadership. It influences how trust is built, how teams collaborate, and how organizations navigate complexity.

When leaders focus on communication that creates connection, they strengthen relationships, build psychological safety, and create environments where people can do their best work.
